Yeah that was the hardest part, I had to "practice" for almost a week before just in case I had to actually go in. AND I had to get up even earlier because I took the bus downtown, which takes about an hour. Thankfully, the earliest I had to be there was 9:30am though.

I'm very familiar with the books (I even have the entire Silmarillion on CD) which is part of why I am so disappointed in the game, it just doesn't live up to how I envisioned it in my head, especially the artwork. Why, oh why, gods of the universe, did Turbine get the rights to this game rather than Blizzard or hell, even Sierra (oh yeah, I forgot, Sierra DID get the rights LOL.) The avatars are ugly and clunky, the world itself (with the exception of Hobbiton) is dull and monotonous, and the quests are dumbed down (admittedly I haven't done higher level epic quests, maybe it gets better, but the level 25 and under ones are just so tedious I have to force myself to do them.) Add to that the fact that the game is nigh unplayable on my computer and it's just torture to play sometimes. I AM glad the game went "free" to play though, because now I can at least pop in for events and dawdling around Hobbiton (the only place I enjoy being ingame) without having to shell out $10 or more a month. I also like that the game is not full of kidlets, which makes the few fellowship quests I'm forced to do, a bit more bearable. I just had such high hopes for the game and it just didn't live up to them. In a sad way, I wish the game hadn't been done, rather than having been done the way it is. Yes, it was an ambitious project, but the Turbine team just doesn't have what it takes for the epic awesomeness the Middle Earth world deserves (hell, they even call the game Lord of the Rings Online, rather than Middle Earth Online, which was its previous working title when the rights were held by Sierra. That alone says something, Sierra wanted to create Middle Earth, online. Turbine wanted to capitalize on the popularity of the movies. Unfortunately for them, the game came out a bit late for that.)

But the game design itself, for me, just falls short. From world design, character design, textures, props, combat system, quest system (instancing is the biggest problem for me, the dynamic "change" is a good idea in concept but it's executed poorly in the game) to the overall "feel" of the game, it just doesn't ring true for me. Asheron's Call did a lot of things right, for its time (back in 1999.) It still had ugly-as-all-get-out character models and textures though. Turbine needs to hire some GOOD artists, who understand things like anatomy and character movement (a dwarf shouldn't ambulate like a human ambulates like a hobbit ambulates.) Someone who understands how to make textures "take up the slack" so to speak. What I mean, is with really well-done textures, you don't need complicated character models. Take a look sometime at how the character models in World of Warcraft differ by race. Yes, the graphics are "cartoonish" but the character models and rigging and animation are superb. Textures are so good, you don't realize how low-polygon the character models are. The game is FAST because of this. Take a look at the trees in the world from region to region. Take a look at the geography, architecture, "feel" of each region. Pay attention to how the world is lit, from interiors to exteriors, region to region. Then take a look at the real world. Then take a look at LOTRO.

And in case you're not familiar with the project before Turbine took it over, have a walk down memory lane: http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/795/795002p1.html And if you do remember, aren't you truly, deep down, just a wee bit disappointed in how it all turned out? Don't you wish, just for a moment, there really was "perma-death?" ;)

I'm on Arkenstone, and my main's name is Haranthir. LOTRO may be difficult to get into if you haven't read the books - for those familiar with Tolkien's universe through the books rather than the movies, though, LOTRO is a fantastic work of art.

I know the whole "right of way" at intersection deal all too well. A bunch of the traffic lights I go thru have green arrows for left turns, one of them with no left turn only lane. People stopped there never seem to realize if there's a green light AND a green left arrow, that means the people coming from the other way have a red and they need to MOVE THEIR ASS! All too often I get stuck having to wait a little extra time to make the left because the idiot ahead of me waited too long to go thru the intersection and the other side now has a green and is coming straight thru.

And as far as the rules for ROW here in NJ, I was taught it's People going straight, people going right, then people going left.
