Wednesday, February 04, 2004 Today I am feeling: Speedy
Books I am reading: Games I am playing: none right now but crossing fingers for WOW beta Welp, I hath done the dirty deed, I bought a new computer. My old computer was choking badly, it got to the point where it'd only boot about once in every 10 or even 20 tries, and it's pathetically slow and frustrating. So, I went to Fry's Electronics, that wondrous Wal*Mart for computer geeks, and got a cheapass eMachine (yeah I know what you're thinking) but it was almost what I wanted, the processor is an AMD not a P4 but according to the Fry's geek and my own research, AMD is as good as or even better than a P4 for most purposes and they're easier to overclock. Not that I do that. I looked at the kits, and realized building my own would end up costing as much or more than the whole machine, and if ya build it yourself, you don't get a unit warranty you get warranties on each part, which isn't really that great cuz you don't know for sure which part went bad if something goes wrong. Plus, thanks to my brother, who recently built a kit and has had all kinds of problems and unexpected expenses, I decided to go cheap and easy. The computer is an AMD Athlon XP, with 512 megs of RAM and a 160 (!) gig hard drive (twice as big as I was gonna get) and it has a 64 meg NVidia GeForce 4 card, built in (on a nForce MB) which isn't great, but as good as the old add-in PCI GF4 I had on my old crappy computer, and it also has an 8X AGP slot for future upgrading if need be. It also has both a DVD drive and a CD-RW drive (which I'm loving, I've never had a CD burner before and mmmm it's tasty!) It also has a media card reader which is nice, cuz now I can just pull my card outta my digital camera instead of hooking it up to an USB port and draining the batteries as it downloads the pix. So now, I can get a bigger media card yay! The only bad thing, and it's really bad, is it came with Windows XP, which really, truly sucks beyond belief. It came with the home version which is probably worse than the Pro version, but I cannot tell you how much I despise the "limited" access account, and since you're not supposed to surf the web and stuff as admin (never mind every Windows user prior to 2000/XP did just that) I have been using a limited account to surf with. I also really, truly hate the interface, even if you switch to classic mode it still has all those lame AOLish icons and buttons, and I hate the way the system is organized, I hate how it forces you to save stuff to My Documents (hey, hack me!) I hate having to tweak my start menu every freaking day, I hate the stupid little hiding tray icons, I hate the messenger than insists on phoning home despite the fact I've disabled it numerous times, I hate that every freakin' program including explorer "needs" to connect to the internet. I am tempted to go back to Windows ME, I hate XP so much. All in all though my computer is blazingly fast, I didn't realize how slow my old one was even on things like browsing websites, but I know now. Programs even install faster. Now, if I just had enough money to buy some cool software like Photoshop and Illustrator and Final Fantasy Online and ....
