I just watched an excellent movie, "Wit" with Emma Thompson. It was one I got as a "free" rental from the video store I swore I would never patronize again, ya well, I gave in, anyway, every month I get a freebie rental cuz I'm on some plan thingie and it costs $9.95/year but I only do the freebie rentals so I get 12 rentals a year for $10, not a bad form of revenge. Anyway, excellent film, I think I shall not be able to read again Runaway Bunny without thinking of the metaphysical meaning. I'll have to read the play the film was based on to see if the exquisite writing was the play or the screenplay. It reminded me of the writing in American Beauty, another film I thought was beautifully written.

I got a Jury Summons today in the mail. For those of you who don't know how it works in California, here goes: You get this stupid little form that you fill out by answering questions, then you MUST call a "registration" number or you CANNOT be excused, or whatever. Anyway, there are a few valid excuses like being ill or no transportation or need to care for sick person, or really really poor, and you can get a postponement for, among other things, being a fulltime student. So I, being a fulltime student figured cool, so I call the number, and go through the voicemail system, and find that, being a fulltime student, the maximum deferral I can get is 90 days. Ninety days! Hmmm ... lemme see, most school semesters are at least 4 months, sometimes 5 months, and 90 days is uhm ... lemme see 3 months. Yeah, that makes sense. So, I'm thinking, shit, should I reschedule 90 days from my original date (which is February 17), or do I just keep the original date or do I, fool of fools, postpone the full 90 days until May 17th which would put me smack dab in the middle of finals week. Hmmm ... lemme see, yeah that sounds good. Heh. Actually, my only "valid" choice in my opinion was to do it during Spring Break in April. I hope all I have to do is call in and they don't need me (which is usually what happens) rather than having to go down there, because, believe me, if I have to go down there they will regret it because I will make it known to anyone there that this 90 day maximum postponement for students is bullcrap, because, had they given me the option to defer longer, I could have easily served for an entire three months, but no, they want me to blow off an entire semester's worth of work not to mention thousands of dollars in fees/supplies and possible permanent damage to my grades, just because their damn phone system can't count past 90. Hey, do ya think if I went ballistic in a court house they'd grant me a permanent excuse from Jury Duty? Hehee. If not, I might just have to think of other alternatives, like showing that I know how "the system" works, and showing that, being a college student, I am capable of critical thought, a big bad red flag for attorneys picking juries. (Which, when you think about it, is sad, they actually prefer people who cannot think to those who can critically analyze the evidence and come to a fair conclusion.) Anyway, enough ranting, but this new "call in" system they have in California blows compared to the old "whine at the window" system they had before for getting excused or postponed from service. Oh well, I guess I should be thankful that in this great, near-bankrupt state, they pay jurors a whopping $15/day for their time. And to think in the good old days they only paid $5/day. Oh well, my own opinion of the whole "jury of one's peers" thing is that it's horrifically faulty, and it all comes down to money and gullibility, if you got enough money or the jury has enough gullibility, you're free, if you're short then welcome to hell, baby.

Today I am feeling: mmmm

Books I am reading:

I went to Wal*Mart today to visit all my former grocery clerk checker friends ... uhm ... haha not really, but I did go there today and while there buying up underpriced stuff, I got some of those new Color Quest M&M's, you know, the ones who are black and white in a futile attempt to get people to buy them? Well, yeah I fell for it but yannow, I realized that they are not black and white, they're brown and white, I even took a picture:

As you can see from the wet part I smeared around from that glossy "black" m&m it is brown, not black, for if it were black, it would leave a black smear, but alas, you can see it left a brown poopy smear, not a black one, like the label on the container ... oh wait, the label is gray not black. Anyway, I thought I'd share that major discovery with you, and yes, I did indeed spit on that m&m to make it wet.

In cat news, while at Wal*Mart I noticed they had a good deal on feline SUVs so I bought one for my cat. Ok, it's not really a kitty car, it's a kiddie car, or more accurately a mini radio control car, hotwheel size, yellow SUV and my cat LOVES it. Best damn cat toy ever, and cheaper than all those mice I've bought over the last year.
