Friday, October 24, 2003 Today I am feeling: perturbed
Books I am reading: The Shock of the New Robert Hughes Human Variation Stephen Molnar Who is Black? F. James Davis Literature of the Western World Brian Wilkie/James Hurt Games I am playing: Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings [online RPG] Welp, I got some ranting to do. Yesterday, I had my midterm in my Art History class, and since the teacher wasn't there (dunno why, but she had told us ahead of time) one of her assistants or something "proctored" the test. But I guess she hadn't rehearsed or something, cuz it was very badly done. There were a few slides we had to identify, and on the test sheet it had a "left" and a "right" side then slide numbers, but she got the sides mixed up and the numbers mixed up and was doing them out of order (slide 3, then 5, then 4, etc) and we were all totally confused so she had to stop and go through them over again "this is slide one", etc, which wasted about 10 minutes. Ordinarily this would be no big deal, but this test had time limits on each question, but she didn't explain if we had to obey them or if we could work ahead. It seemed like most people were working ahead, but I didn't until the last question, which I had to because if I had obeyed the time limits, the test would have been over at least 10 minutes after class was over, and I have another class after this one, and the teacher in that class is picky about people being late (fortunately, I didn't have a midterm though.) So, I finished "early" and turned in my test instead of waiting for them to be collected or whatever, but I wasn't sure what we were supposed to do cuz she hadn't explained it. I wasn't the only one who turned theirs in though. But anyway, it was a very frustrating and annoying experience, and midterms are bad enough when things go as planned. I'm sure the teacher will hear lots of whining next week hehe. In my rendering class, our teacher is back from India after a two-week absence. She had some family stuff to do there or something so we had a substitute for the time she was gone and the sub was a grad student who had never taught before, need I say more? <evil grin> Anyway, our teacher brought us all "friendship bracelets" as presents from India, isn't that nice? They're just beads on string but kinda cool. Maybe she got wind of how much we liked our sub and decided to bribe us or something. Or maybe she's just nice. Our sub let us out early though, which we really liked. Hehe. Oh, and I found out that one of our projects, to paint a Halloween mask, isn't to PAINT a Halloween mask (which sounded fun but I was wondering how we were gonna "render" on a mask) but it's that we're going to paint a PICTURE of the Halloween mask. Waaah. Oh well. But we get to use color. Which I'm not sure is a good thing hehe. I'm having enough trouble with black and white. But I have painted before at least. We're gonna do 'em in watercolor using 3 colors, black, red and blue. In cat news, my kitty has found a new game: Hide between the shower curtains and pounce when anyone comes into the bathroom. Or better yet, hide then suddenly jump into the bathtub and knock all the junk off the edge into the tub. Noisy and fun! I keep thinking maybe the cat is trying to tell me she's dirty and wants a bath, but if I turn on the water, she runs away. Either that or she's trying to tell ME I need a bath. In strike, news, I crossed a picket line again today. But this time it was in revenge. I had gone to the video store in the same mini-mall, but the picketers at the store (Pavilions, not Albertsons this time) were standing IN THE STREET BLOCKING TRAFFIC and saying rude things to at least some of the passersby. "Get out of here you scab!", to quote one of 'em. I don't think they said anything to me as I drove by cuz I had my windows up and radio on, and I woulda ignored them anyway, but as I was walking into the store, I heard 'em yell that at a car. Mighta been an employee who'd crossed lines or something, I dunno. Anyway, they were being rude, so I decided to be rude and cross the picket line, and I went inside to buy some sushi. Probably the most risky thing to buy from a store on strike, but hell, I was hungry, and I had planned to go to the Panda Express outside instead, but sushi sounded good to me after the picketers riled me up. Pavilions was pretty empty in the produce section, btw. I didn't go around checking out the rest of the store but there were a few employees there and a few customers, not crowded though. I didn't recognize any of the employees but I didn't recognize any of the strikers, either. They all looked like teenagers to me, the union prolly bribed some students from the high school down the street to picket or something. That would also explain the rudeness, too. That's all the ranting for now, well, except one last one: I have a headache from the smoke in the air from all the brushfires around, and my throat hurts too, so I hope I'm not getting sick that would suck cuz I have a *#&^load of homework this weekend. Grrrr ....

Monday, October 20, 2003 Today I am feeling: psychic
Books I am reading: The Shock of the New Robert Hughes Human Variation Stephen Molnar Who is Black? F. James Davis Literature of the Western World Brian Wilkie/James Hurt A Room of One's Own Virginia Woolf Games I am playing: Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings [online RPG]
I found this sorta addictive yet increasingly frustrating game called The ESP Game and I managed after about an hour playing to figure out how to uhm ... "read minds" yeah, that's it, and after a few more hours over a couple days I got onto the top scores list. If ya work it right, it's pretty easy to get 9000-10000 points per game, as long as the person you're playing against isn't a slow typer or a MORON. Unfortunately, to win, you have to sorta do stuff that sorta defeats the point of the "game" which is to "label the web" so I think the chance of this little experiment's failure is "black" and "blue" erm I mean high. In other news, I was bad sick last night, but I dunno if it was side effects from my flu shot or side effects from eating dinner out at Sizzler. I feel ok today though, so probably it was the food, I had greasy fried shrimp so my body probably rebelled cuz I usually eat very healthily. Heh yeah right. I shoulda known better than to eat out, cuz I've never had a flu shot before so I didn't know how it would affect me. My symptoms weren't all that flu-like except for the uhm ... upper portion. Hehe. No sniffles, sore throat, fever or anything though.

Sunday, October 19, 2003 Today I am feeling: Albertsonsy
Books I am reading: The Shock of the New Robert Hughes Human Variation Stephen Molnar Who is Black? F. James Davis Literature of the Western World Brian Wilkie/James Hurt A Room of One's Own Virginia Woolf Games I am playing: Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings [online RPG] I went to the grocery strore to get a flu shot today, at the "evil" store where all the wimps who are afraid to shop at the strike/lockout stores were shopping. On a Sunday. Stupid morons. There were, and I kid you not, at least 15 people in each and every checkout lane (and it was the first time I had ever seen EVERY lane open in that store) and the store was the filthiest place I've ever been in, it looked like they hadn't mopped in at least a week, sticky black junk all over the floor in the aisles, yuck. Makes me never wanna shop there again. <evil grin> Anyway, I got my flu shot (totally painless and I am a major needle-phobic) and had to sit there for 10 minutes to make sure I didn't have a reaction. So, I sat there and ogled at the wimpy doofus people who would rather stand in line for an hour to buy three items than cross a picket line at the store across the street. After I got my flu-shot, I went back to Albertsons and did some shopping, cheerfully telling the picketers at the entrance to "keep circulating" cuz that's what their union wants them to do! It's on their website yannow, and they really truly should do as their union says, since they are sheeple and didn't bother to actually read the contract proprosal (or they're just liars) cuz the stuff they were spouting was totally wrong. They are NOT losing 50% of their benefits. The 50% refers to the cost covered under the new proprosed medical plan for NEW HIRES who go to OUT OF PLAN DOCTORS. If they go to in plan doctors, it covers 70% which is only 10% less than current employees have. The only part of the contract that I partially agree with the strikers on is about the cut in pensions, but I only minutely support that for the employees who have worked for at least 15 years, cuz anyone hired after that should know that pensions are a thing of the past. But old people who grew up in a land of plenty where most companies rewarded loyalty with pensions didn't know the world would change, and by the time pensions started phasing out 10 or 15 years ago in America they'd already invested a lot of years in the company. So, for them, I will listen to them whine a little and won't argue with 'em but for the greedy-ass younger people and newer employees, get a clue. Pensions don't exist anymore unless you are highly skilled and/or college educated and very very lucky. Anyway, I quite like shopping at Albertsons now, it's clean, employees are friendly, well-trained, helpful, and there are no lines! Plus, I got a killer deal on flaming hot cheetos ... 10 for $10! Woot! I did notice though that the meat case was empty (the butcher meat case, I dunno if they're on strike too or what) and that the meat in the other display cases looked a bit erm ... rank ... but I'm not much of a meat eater anyway. Produce was a bit understocked, but looked fine, dairy looked fine, bakery and deli was actually busy. So, given a choice between Stater Brothers and Albertsons, I'll take Albertsons, baby! And, I've gotten such great service there during the strike I might just keep shopping there! I know who the "good" checkers are now too .... <evil grin>
