Friday, September 05, 2003 Today I am feeling: cranky
Books I am reading: The Shock of the New Robert Hughes Human Variation Stephen Molnar Who is Black? F. James Davis Literature of the Western World Brian Wilkie/James Hurt Games I am playing: Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings [online RPG] Too much homework. Waaaah. Over 150 pages of reading in the first 2 days. Three assignments and one paper due the first week. Waaah. Damn I guess they aren't kidding when they say the university is "challenging". Oh well, I'll adjust, I'm just so used to community college where it's a paper a semester, not a paper a week. Good thing I like to read! Other than the assault of homework, school is ok, none of my teachers are psychos, although one is a bit uhm ... overly enthusiastic and a couple are nitpicky perfectionists. And one assigns just way too much homework. And that class is a "freshman" class if ya go by the course number. Sheesh, scare those freshmen away! It's not really a freshman course though, it's one everyone, even transfer students have to take, and it's modeled after graduate seminars, hence all the reading and writing and analysis stuff.

Sunday, August 31, 2003 Today I am feeling: dopey
Books I am reading: none at the moment Games I am playing: Asheron's Call [online RPG] Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings [online RPG] I haXXor3d the UI for AC2 so it looks all purply and stuff. Well, ok, I didn't really hack it I just tinted some of the images. I did the same thing in beta, too, but it's a wee bit harder now cuz the images are stuffed into a data archive file which is a whopping 1.5 gigs, which means 1.5 gigs of your harddrive is taken up for the backup file that you made. You did make a backup, right. Hehe. Uh ... well, sure, yeah, every hacker (note: "hacker" is not the same as "cracker", "hacker" means one who likes to futz around in programs to see how they work, like Linux geeks who code their own distros; "cracker" is someone who is malicious in their intent and does what they can to wreak havoc upon the world, usually by breaking into other people's computers or writing viruses) knows that's rule one. I learned that one eons ago when one time I failed to back up a file, and when the altered file caused a Red Screen of Death (much worse than a Blue Screen of Death) and my computer halted and would not do anything. Ooopsie. Anyway, it's dangerous not to make a backup, but I figure it's just AC2, not Windows I'm fuxxoring with so the worst that will happen is I'll have to re-install the game. I hope. Heh. Anyway, I spent about 4 freakin' hours altering all the images I could find but alas, some of them were not changed, not sure if it's cuz they didn't "inject" properly or because they're new (the injector program/file set I used as base stuff was probably kinda old.) The worst part was doing the images for the character selection screen and stuff cuz I had to mask portions of the image so the whole damn thing didn't look purple. It's still a bit too purple, I might do it over, I dunno. Anyway, here is a screenie of dear little Snowball (his "real" name is Snowflake, after his previous beta incarnation, but someone is already using that name), the timid Lugian showing off the newly purple-ized interface and his undies at the same time! A word to the wise, Lugians should NOT run around the world in their undies, it's just ... unseemly. In other news, school starts Tuesday, right after Labor Day. Ah, Labor Day, a celebration of unions in America. Or something like that. I'm generally opposed to unions, not because I don't understand what they're for, but because an awful lot of them have gotten way outta hand and the union bosses are as bad as the bosses the unions were trying to overthrow back in the olden days when people were happy to work for three cents an hour 12 hours a day and seven days a week. Well, ok, not happy but they did it cuz they had families to support. No SUVs back then, no sir! Anyway, I'm all for fair wages and a fair workweek (which in America is becoming a thing of the past anyway, how many people do you know who actually work only forty hours a week now?) Raise the minimum wage so it's high enough that someone can actually live on it (not "live" as in can afford a new SUV and a large house in a wealthy neighborhood, but "live" as in have enough money for a decent apartment or small modest home in a decent neighborhood and enough money to buy food and clothes, and the basic needs of life.) If ya wanna pay teens lower wages, well, that's maybe ok, but then they'll rebel cuz they're being discriminated against. Hehe. Anyway, enough labor ranting. Uhm ... lemme see ... school soon, no life soon ... ah but I have money now yay for federal subsidies for students! I make more money goin' to school on government support than working a minimum wage job, go figure. Oh, and one final note, is it just me, or is the musical Gypsy just the most fab musical ev-uh? I shall go listen to the new recording with Bernadette Peters as Mama Rose (who ever though SHE would be Mama? Eek, now I feel really old.)
