Monday, March 01, 2004 Today I am feeling: Fine and Dandy 5
Books I am reading: Games I am playing: none right now but crossing fingers for WOW beta Welp, the grocery strike is finally over, and guess what? No one won! Hurray! The stores did get the two-tier thing that they really really wanted, and the union got to keep healthcare for the employees who were hired before the strike, as well as the pensions. Unfortunately for the union, quite a few employees will have their hours cut or pay cut due to shifts in job descriptions and promotions, and scheduling, and possibly layoffs. And new hires will get shafted with lower wages and having to wait a year to get any health benefits at all, plus it'll take longer for them to work their way up through the ranks. But most of all the customers got screwed cuz now we'll have to listen to the union employees bitch and moan about the crappy contract for the next 3 years, and they'll probably go back to their old ways of paying more attention to the clerk next to them than the customers, or hiding in the back room to avoid helping customers. Ok, true, not all of them were like that but I do have to say, of all the stores I visited during the strike, and all the replacement workers, there was only ONE that seemed to not really want to be there. All the others were smiling, helpful, and went out of their way to thank me for shopping at their store during the strike. Now I have to decide, do I go back to the store I shopped at before the strike (Stater Brothers) which is a union store, do I keep shopping at the stores I shopped at during the strike (Ralphs and Albertsons and sometimes Pavilions) and risk getting dirty looks from the former picketers but take advantage of staring them down and making them WORK for their pay, or do I shop at non-union stores so that the union sheep are more likely to be out of jobs and the next time there's a strike, maybe the union will be busted. Decisions decisions. But hey, I'm a lazy-ass, I'll probably just go back to my old bad habits. But if even ONE of those workers starts whining about their contract, I'll just kindly ask them if that's appropriate behavior for someone who's overpaid. In other news, yes I got mod points again .... Other than that, not much else is new, same old same old, but I am happy as a hobbit that Lord of the Rings swept all 11 Oscars that they were nominated for. Too bad they weren't nom'd for cinematography, sound editing or any acting awards, they coulda walked away with a record. But my faith in the academy has been restored, they finally awarded a film an Oscar that truly deserved if, if only for the sheer magnitude of the undertaking. Plus it increases the chances that The Hobbit might be made into a film by Peter Jackson too ....
