Friday, February 13, 2004 Today I am feeling: Amused
Books I am reading: Games I am playing: none right now but crossing fingers for WOW beta My cat brought me yet another "gift" yesterday ... this time a butterfly. A dead, ant-covered butterfly. My cat, junk collector. Sigh. Maybe I should sell some of her "finds" on ebay and make some kitty treat money or something. I have also once again caught the Slashdot Moderator flu, and gotten Mod points 5 times in the last 2 weeks. I truly think their "random" code is bugged, I go months with no points then I get them once and they come in bunches, I get rid of them and the next day there's more! I refuse to use them and they go away for maybe a day but then they're back aqain! Aarrrgh! I would ignore them altogether but I feel so dirty and guilty if I let them die unused ... and I don't get happy positive feedback if I don't use them. In other news, I have five days off school this weekend. Today, which is semi dead-president's day, and apparently a holiday at school, although it's not listed as a "campus closed" holiday, but 2 of my teachers have said there's no school today and a third teacher doesn't have a class listed for today on her syllabus, so I'm covered if it turns out there was indeed classes, I'll just point to the syllabus and say nuh-uh! And Monday of course is the "real" President's Day, and then on yesterday my teacher told us he had "family business" next Tuesday (which likely means "long weekend vacation" or something) so there's no class Tuesday, and since I dropped my other Tuesday class, I don't have to do yay! And the best part is I have very little homework, only four small watercolors to do of which I've done 3 but I might re-do a couple because they came out kinda crappy. Especially since we get 2 weeks to work on them, I figure I should make them "good". Lemme see what else ... I have been unable to find any of those Pepsi bottles with the free iTunes game on them, either the stores only have some old lame Lakers game caps or there is no Pepsi. I want free songs! Legal ones! I did buy one song from iTunes just to make sure it worked ok though, before I shell out dough for Pepsi bottles. I do normally drink Pepsi but I usually buy it in cans, which is a bit cheaper than the bottles, but with possible free songs, it probably comes out about the same price. Plus it's fun! Uhm ... grocery strike is still going on, I think it's like four months now, only eight more months and maybe it'll turn out like the Tyson strike, which ended with the union begrudgingly "saving" itself by approving the crappy contract offered, otherwise the replacement workers could have voted to de-certify the union. So I guess the union really does care more about protecting itself (and the salaries of those who run it) than in protecting its workers. If I was one of those union people (haha that'd never happen) I woulda been pissed at the union telling me to give up a YEAR of wages/benefits only to essentially get nothing in the end but more union dues. Unfortunately most of the union sheep probably sucked it up and went back to work at their "old jobs" with lower wages, benefits, etc and they still pay their union dues like good little sheep. I woulda told the union where to stick their picket. And I woulda tried to convince all the other union sheep to just get a "real job" and let the replacements decertify. But then I'd probably be dead. Haha. Scare tactics, threats of bodily harm, yeah, that's the good ol' union. I understand now in some parts some union leaders have actually told strikers it's ok to make threats to customers and stuff. If that's true, that's pathetic, and only in America would that kinda stuff be allowed, I mean, isn't threatening to hurt someone a crime? Well, unless you're in a union I guess. And even hitting someone with a sign (assault and battery) is apparently only a misdemeanor. But selling a joint to your neighbor is a felony with years in prison, go figure. What a wonderful country we live in .... Oh, and speaking of screwed up countries, WTF is up with all this "let's make a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage" stuff? Isn't the constitution supposed to protect citizen's rights? I'll have to re-read it, but if such an amendment did pass wouldn't it be the first time the constitution takes away rights of Americans? I think there are too many narrow-minded, self-righteous assholes in this country who think it is not only their right but their duty to control the lives of others (and these people cross party lines too, it's not just Republicans or Democrats.) I think a lot of people don't see this as a civil rights issue, they see it as a "moral" issue (and usually a "religious moral issue" which should send up big neon-lit red flags of doom) ... but just remember, many years ago, people saw letting black people have rights as a "moral" issue and women not having rights as a "moral" issue. It's the same kinda thing, a divisive issue that will yet again separate the nation, but hopefully will turn out ok in the end. And OK means everyone has the same rights, not only those of whom the "majority" approves ... just because people vote on something doesn't make it right, it only means it's popular. To semi-paraphrase some person whose name escapes me, Democracy is doomed to failure because once people figure out they get what they vote for, they'll vote for things which serve themselves, not society. So, if you don't like the idea of gay marriage, don't marry a gay person. And do what you can to protect the rights of all Americans, not just those who agree with you.
