Saturday, November 22, 2003 Today I am feeling: disgusted with humanity
Books I am reading: The Shock of the New Robert Hughes Human Variation Stephen Molnar Who is Black? F. James Davis Literature of the Western World Brian Wilkie/James Hurt Games I am playing: no time now I got in the mail today a whiny letter from "Women on Strike asking Women for help" and I just had to puke. Well, ok, I didn't puke, I laughed then realized that these people are truly pathetic to ask total strangers to make sure that THEY get health insurance, for free, for working part-time jobs just because they're moms. Give me a fu ... erm freakin' break. If they truly cared, they would take the money it cost to mail out all these stupid letters/petitions to the governor and use it to pay for health insurance. That of course, is assuming they actually won't have health insurance, which, according to the proposal by the stores, they will. Here are a couple quotes from the whiny letter: "Vons, Pavilions and Albertsons forced us to go on strike." Uhm ... no, it was your union that forced you to go on strike at Vons, and since YOU chose to join the union, if you work for Vons or Pavilions it's YOUR fault you're on strike. As for Albertsons, well, the stores stated clearly before the strike that if there was one it was gonna be an "strike against one is a strike against all" kinda thing but the union still CHOSE to go on strike anyway, knowing full well their employees would be unable to work. So, it's the UNION'S fault, not the stores. "They want to ruin our family health insurance and force many of us on to taxpayer funded Medi-Cal" and "Vons, Pavilions and Albertsons make a good profit. They shouldn't be trying to make more by cutting our family health insurance." Hmmm ... if 2% is "good profit" then I dunno what these people would think of say, unions that make much larger profits than the stores. Maybe THEY should pay for health insurance for all their employees, instead of making them contribute to the costs. I already addressed the cutting the health care issue, and as for this sense of they make money so they must buy me stuff, well, that's just the union mentality of entitlement and "get what you can" thinking. Any reasonable person would realize we live in a global market economy and if the market won't bear certain things, then those things go bye-bye. Look around, most people in this country pay at least a portion of their health care insurance. Especially people who work part-time jobs. Even grocery checker in unions in other states pay part of their insurance costs. As for the Medi-Cal issue, they're not losing their insurance, they might have to pay *gasp* $20 a month for it or something though. If that $20/mo. is enough to drive them to Medi-Cal maybe they oughta give up the Pepsi and cigarettes. The more likely scenario is the union will lose and all those striking people will be outta a job and THEN be forced onto Medi-Cal, but that wouldn't happen if they hadn't voted to strike, or even if they'd just resign their unions and get the hell back to work. And at the end of this whiny letter are some names, one of which is very much like that of the Mayor of the town I live in, but the middle initial is different, so I am pretty sure it's a different person, but I intend to write to the Mayor and ask, just in case, cuz if it IS her, that'll be one vote she won't be getting next election. Besides, I highly doubt the Mayor has to supplement her income with a job as a cashier at Albertsons. Anyway, I am truly irked by this attempt for sympathy, and angry there are outright lies in this letter. I hope the rest of my neighbors are smart enough to see through this lame attempt at union support and I hope they all decide they will NOT be in support of this strike in any way, shape or form while they're out doing their holiday shopping, which, by the way, I am sure is why this letter went out when it did. And to think I was gonna go grocery shopping today ... well, I know now which stores I'll visit!
