Friday, October 17, 2003 Today I am feeling: groovy
Books I am reading: The Shock of the New Robert Hughes Human Variation Stephen Molnar Who is Black? F. James Davis Literature of the Western World Brian Wilkie/James Hurt A Room of One's Own Virginia Woolf Games I am playing: Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings [online RPG] I crossed picket lines today to buy something at the local Albertsons. Or should I say, I walked by 2 slow-moving people holding picket signs. One of 'em tried to give me a flyer, but being the smarty-pants that I am, I already know everything, so I declined. I went to the store for 2 reasons: One, as a matter of principle and Two cuz I refuse to shop at my regular store cuz it's overrun with wimpy-wimps who are scared to cross picket lines, so the parking lot is too full and I'd have to wait in LINE at the checkout. Grrrr ... they're a union store, anyway, so shopping there would just stuff the strike fund anyway. So, I went to the strike store, or more correctly, a store that had "locked out" the union workers (yay for them!) Plus, as an added bonus, it was in the same strip mall as the Subway sandwich place where I bought lunch, and as a double-bonus, they had some great bargain sales. For some amusement, I've been reading a message board of bickering between strikers and the people who oppose them. Who's the whiniest? YOU decide! I do have to say though, that I got GREAT customer service at the store from the scabs or non-union or whatever they were people: They thanked me for coming in, they were smiling, helpful and could actually do the job! Wow! Amazing! Hehe. Erm ... yeah. Like scanning stuff is hard, hell even I can do it so I know it's not hard (yes, sad but true, I have actually worked as a checkout clerk ... but NOT a union one.) The thing that amuses me most though, is that by rejecting the offer, union employees have pretty much guaranteed that they will either lose their jobs or that the next offer will be something like lower pay, no benefits and no pension. The days of employer provided perks have ended, it's the 21st century now, a global economy, and we have to compete against not only Wal*Mart but China and Mexico! I have no problem with picketers standing up for what they believe, but dudes, take off the blinders and let the light of reason shine in. Oh, and quit sitting around munching chips in the parking lot, you're supposed to KEEP MOVING! Hehee.
