Sunday, September 21, 2003 Today I am feeling: bitchy
Books I am reading: The Shock of the New Robert Hughes Human Variation Stephen Molnar Who is Black? F. James Davis Literature of the Western World Brian Wilkie/James Hurt Games I am playing: Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings [online RPG] I have had a crappy weekend so far. First, last Friday I had to stay after school for being a bad girl. Well, sorta, in my rendering class we were doing perspective drawings (still life, styrofoam sphere, cube, cylinder, ooh, fun) and the teacher made us stay until we got them exactly right so that we can do our rendering by start of class next week. I really hate doing perspective (I am more of an "eyeball it" kinda person) and drawing all those damn lines drives me nuts, and I don't like the way stuff looks that's drawn that way anyway, it's too "sterile" and exact and lifeless. Sorta like the way computer-drawn images look: fake. I understand that doing this will help my drawing skills, and help me visualize perspective better so I can "eyeball it" more accurately, but that doesn't mean I have to LIKE it. Hehe. Anyway, that was Friday. Saturday, I did my usual flaking out in the daytime (in other words, not doing homework) cuz I need to have SOME free time for fun, yannow? So, I procrastinated doing my homework until later, and only got one thing done (fortunately I don't have a lot of homework this weekend, just one paper, one set of "roughs" for my typography class, and that stupid still life render for my rendering class. So, I did the easiest one, the roughs. I was gonna do the paper, but alas, last night, while right in the middle of typing an ICQ message to a friend, my monitor decided to die, right then and there. Geez, usually they have the courtesy to give ya a warning by flickering or something, but nope, damn, weird sound (actually I thought it was my harddrive that died, it was that kinda sound) then boom, screen goes black, nothing from monitor. Shut down computer blind (I'm used to that given my video card problems over the last year, I know what keys/clicks to make to shut down without seeing.) Unplugged monitor for safety reasons (no smoke though) and then plugged it into another outlet just to be sure that wasn't the problem. Nothing, no power, no blinky, no light-up power indicator, nothing. Well, damn. This happened at about 7:30pm and I am pretty sure stores close early on Saturday nights. So, too late to get a monitor. And of course, with no computer, I can't do my paper (it has to be in electronic format cuz we submit them online.) So, fast-forward to Sunday morning. I go to FIVE, count them FIVE different stores looking for a cheap replacement monitor. Apparently, CRT monitors are obsolete now having been replaced by LCD monitors, cuz of the five stores, I found a total of 3 different CRTs. One was crappy (eMachine, no thanks), one was an ugly overpriced Compaq, and one was an over priced Proview, which is what my old one was, only now instead of costing $129 they cost $209. Go figure. And it was an ugly grey color. Huh. So, I'm thinkin' do I really wanna get a crappy eMachines one that I KNOW will die, or do I pay through the nose for a Proview that will probably die cuz that's what my last one was? So, I look around and notice that they have LCD monitors (albeit 15" not 17") for not a whole lot more than the crappy CRTs. Plus they're small, light, don't consume nearly as much power, and are "cool". So, I debate, hew & haw, kvetch, twitch, etc, and finally decide that since I can't find a damn salesman to help me and cuz I really don't wanna try to lug a 50 pound monitor into the house by myself, I decide wtf and buy an LCD for $60 more than the Proview CRT. I hate forced obsolescence. I will also hate having to go without food for a month to pay for the damn monitor that I thought would cost me at most $100 to replace. Grrr. And to think, for only a $100 more I coulda had an entire (gimped) eMachines system! Whee! Erm ... yeah k. Anyway, the new LCD works ok, it's smaller (15") but the picture is pretty clear, the thing doesn't flicker at all (thanks to the LCD technology) and it's nice and small, I have lots more deskspace now, and I can lift the damn monitor up to clean under it! Woot! No more dust bunny colonies behind the monitor. The only thing I don't like about it (other than the size, which is really not that big a deal) is that it looks kinda "faded", the colors aren't as bright, and of course, it's a bit grainer than the CRT (but not much.) I also like that it has a non-glare screen, so I can actually use the computer now in the daytime without closing my blinds and still be able to read the screen! They supposedly use quite a bit less power too, which is good for the environment and all that. Ok, enough about computer junk. Now I can talk about more important junk, like my cat's birthday. My kitty is ONE YEAR OLD TODAY! And she didn't get a party cuz mommy is in a bitchy mood. Poor thing. Didn't get any new toys, or any yummy special kitty treats or anything. Didn't even get a cake. Or her picture taken, although I'll try to do that later, right now she's out carrying on with the cute boy kitty down the street. His name is Butch. I am so glad my "daughter" is a cat and not a human or I would be very concerned. Butch is a nice boy kitty, but he gets around if you know what I mean. Anyway, enough whining, I do have more stuff to whine about (namely parents) but I shall save that monologue for my therapist. ;)
