Today I am feeling: earthy
Happy Earth Day!

Books I am reading:
More than a Carpenter Josh McDowell

Games I am playing (when I have time which is hardly ever):
Oracle of Ages [Gameboy Color]
Lord of the Rings, Two Towers [Gameboy Advance]

First of all, it's spring break for me and other than the frustrating moments I've worked on my research paper, I have been bored outta my mind. So, I got a few books from the library and started reading one, More than a Carpenter which is supposedly the attempt of a former "skeptic" at converting people to Christianity through "proof", unfortunately, he seems to not understand basic concepts of logic. The book is full of assumptions that he then uses as ways to prove something else. And he'll say things like (paraphrased) if Jesus isn't the savior then he must have been either crazy or a liar, which he may very well have been either (or both) but he could have been other things too, like, oh I dunno, a mythological character that took on a "life" of his own through numerous revisions and changes through hundreds and thousands of years (try reading the story of Osiris and see if you see any similarities.) But wait, he "proved" Jesus really lived in a previous chapter, based on of course, assumptions. Anyway, fortunately it's a very short book but I can't imagine anyone with a brain actually being converted by this book, and I seriously question the "fact" the author claims he used to be a skeptic, I think it's more likely he wanted to believe and was willing to grasp at the frailest straws to convince himself of the "truth". Of course, a true Christian goes by faith, not logic (and the best way to control people is to convince them not to think, but rather to allow the thinking to be done by others and allow them to "lead you", in faith, of course.) The best "God" is one who likes wily foxes rather than sheep anyway, what fun is it getting a buncha sheep to believe in you? Sheep will follow anything, but a fox, now if you can convince a fox to follow you, that's an accomplishment!

Ok, enough ree-lee-jun talk, now on to something important, Geocaching! I tried geocaching yesterday, for real. I had zero success. None. Not one cache found. I decided to try the ones in the park, thinking it was a weekday, spring break, no one would be there, right? Wrong. Full of people, kids, dogs, security guards. Oh well, I will not be daunted, I shall practice my stealthing skills! So, I wander around the park, surreptitiously checking my newly obtained GPS to see where I am. First cache, type in coords, follow the arrow, wow, .25 miles away, oh well, walk ... walk ... walk ... oh, only 400 feet more ... walk ... walk ... walk ... only 194 feet more ... walk ... walk ... walk ... what? 264 feet? Huh? Check arrow, try again, repeat a few times, end up next to a drainage ditch, about 30 feet from a chainlink fence that has a freeway on the other side of but GPS says cache is about another 100 feet which would place it right in the middle of the freeway. Am I supposed to scale the fence and dodge 70 mph traffic to find the cache? Uhm ... I don't think so, so finally decide either coords are wrong, or GPS unit is fuXX0r3d.

Ok, lemme see, let's try this other one. I type in coords, drive to near them and park. Wander around ok arrow points north, go north, get around 190 feet or so, now it says go east, ok that's good cuz there's another chain link fence I'd have to scale if I kept going north (maybe chain link fences mess up GPS signals?) Head east, walk ... walk ... walk ... check location, walk ... says go south now hmm ok ... walk ... ended up walking halfway around a lake not finding the cache and GPS kept telling me to go another way when it got around 100 feet or so. Huh. Ok. Scratch this cache.

Lemme see, oh no more in this park, ok ... oh, here's one near my house ... drive, park. Hmmm ... lots of cars and stuff. Very out in the open. I think I will chicken out on this one. Hmm ... oh! Here's a virtual cache I could do, not too far away. Drive ... park ... find ... success! Oh wait, he wants 2 pieces of information and I only see one of 'em on the object. Look closer ... closer ... damn I must be blind. Oh, here's some writing, wtf? It's all garbled and apparently in Spanish, huh, doesn't look like a name to me, don't think that's it. Wander around area lookin' for another sign, see body outline on concrete, uhm ... I guess "Joe" had a bad day. Hehe. Decide to leave, maybe I wrote down what was needed wrong.

Ok ... 0 for 4 ... well, there is that one cache near my house which I've driven by a few times but chickened out cuz it's on a busy street. I could try that one ... drive ... park ... walk ... hmmm .. 135 feet away <gulp> it's in the middle of an empty lot I think ... and there's ducks there, I don't wanna disturb them, damn I wish I had a dog to use as an excuse ... uhm ... whimper .... Grrr ... ok I'll just call it a day. 0-5. I am a pathetic little newbie geocacher. <cries> Oh, well, I did pick up some trash while I was out so it wasn't a total waste. I even found an (empty) easter egg floating in the creek. But when I got home I found out that the first cache didn't exist anymore, the second cache was a multi-cache and I needed to find a sign not a cache (didn't even get within about 100 feet of the sign though anyway, I know which one it is after reading the site), 3rd was cuz I'm lame, 4th was cuz I'm lame, 5th is cuz I'm lame. So really, I was only 0-3 not 0-5 hehee.

Today is Earth Day. I am going to try to cache again, this time I shall be brave! I think I will also try a letterbox first! Maybe. We'll see, maybe I'll just return the GPS and live a life of vicarious geocaching through log reading while my smarty-pants friend in Michigan keeps finding about 5 caches a day grrrr.
