Friday, March 21, 2003 Today I am feeling: dandy
Books I am reading: Mort Terry Pratchett Voyages Through the Universe Fraknoi/Morrison/Wolff Gardner's Art Through the Ages - The Western Perspective Games I am playing: games? I ain't got no time for games!! Unless ya count mind games, that is. Yesterday at my school, the Cultural Affairs department had a lecture with Thomas Murphy. He's a thorn in the side of the Mormon church because he wrote a paper (and is/was doing his PhD thesis) on how the Book of Mormon claim that Lamanites (American Indians to normal people) couldn't be valid since mtDNA tests show they are descended from Asia, not the Middle East as the BoM claims. The church threatened to ex-communicate him for publishing his paper. Sad, isn't it? But hey, they do that all the time to "intellectuals" and "scholars" and "dissidents". Now, you'd think if the Mormon church was really THE true and only church of Jesus Christ here upon this earth, they'd not be afraid of a little scientific research, right? I mean if it's Jesus' church you'd think he could convince God to help out a little and "fix" the mtDNA so it agrees or something. Mormons, of course, claim God/Jesus doesn't fix it cuz that wouldn't test their faith and apparently Jesus/God is really into testing people's faith to help them prove they're worthy of spending time and all eternity in Heaven with him. Funny, cuz I always thought all ya had to do was believe in Jesus and you had your free ticket to heaven, oh well. Anyway, the lecture was kinda interesting, nothing groundbreaking since the mtDNA thing has been used to show human migrations and stuff which I already knew about. And the lecture wasn't as anti-Mormon as I expected, which was actually nice, I mean, even the Institute Director wasn't bothered enough to ask any questions after the lecture, which I was certain he would, judging from the copious notes he took during it. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him and he, being a member missionary, introduced himself, and probably woulda started trying to convert me if I hadn't blurted "Are you a Mormon?" and told him I was an exmo. Hehee. He was nice about it though, even said goodbye after the lecture, which is interesting, since "good" Mormons aren't supposed to associate with evil Apostates. I did find it amusing during the lecture that Thomas Murphy mentioned some of the comments made by "prophets" of the church, like that if Lamanites (whose skin is dark ie "cursed" due to the whole Cain lineage thing) lived righteously in Mormonism or adopted Lamanite children were brought into Mormon homes, they became "white and delightsome", literally, as in their skin became lighter, and I was thinkin', well duh, they spend all their free time indoors at boring church meetings instead of outside working or playing in the sunshine. Anyway, it was a subtle hint at the deep-rooted racism that permeated (and still permeates to some extent) the Mormon church. After the lecture, I said hi to Mr. Murphy, told him I was an exmo and got him to sign the book which I bought, cuz I felt I should support his cause. Once he gets ex-communicated (it's "permanently" on hold at the moment) it might become valuable or something. And he'd be the second Mormon I've met who was ex-comm'd for writing or saying stuff the Mormon church disagrees with (the other one was someone I met as a teen on a cruise my family went on, we were both Mormon at the time, and I kept in touch with her for a couple years after. I later heard that she had been fired and ex-comm'd during the big fiasco at BYU in the early 90's. She had been working on her Masters or PhD when I met her. She was a professor at BYU when she was booted for teaching there is a heavenly mother, which there is according to Mormon doctrine (and God and his wife have sex too!) Anyway, the church didn't like her teaching that doctrine even though it was true according to their church.) Ok, enough Mormon stuff. On to kitten stuff! My wee little baby kitten is officially "big" today, she is 6 months old, which means if I hadn't had the vet yank her "parts" out she'd be old enough to have babies. Thankfully, that won't happen. She still hasn't given up the "sucky blanket" thing, I guess it'll be a permanent thing for her. Poor thing misses her cat-mommy *still*. Either that or it's just fun to spit all over my blankets every morning. In honor of my CAT's half-birthday, I have uploaded more pictures to the kitten pix page. Beginning next month it will become the cat pix page. Maybe. If I get around to fixin' the titles. I also went out to visit the campus of CSU Fullerton today. The only thing that impressed me was the ease of finding a good parking place. The campus is tiny, almost as small as the junior college I attend now. And it was kinda run-down looking. There were a lot of asian students though, so that probably means the school is decent academically, since most Asian students are pretty serious about their studies. There were pretty many white people too, but I saw zero blacks or latinos. Interesting. It is Orange County, though. And a Friday. But still. Anyway, I've pretty much decided that I won't go there unless I can't get in as an art major at CSULB. Fullerton offers a degree in animation and their BFA program doesn't require a portfolio review (ie easy to get into) but judging from the quality of student art on display, it isn't nearly of the calibur as CSULB. The LB campus is really close to where I live too, so I wouldn't have to drive if I didn't want to. And the CSU system lets you "visit" other campuses, so I might just do one semester at Fullerton to get some animation classes or something maybe. And last but not least, we have kicked Saddam's ass to the moon! Whee! And gas prices and down and the stock market is up! Yay for war! Erm, well, ok, not yay but I am glad Bush finally got off his ass and went to work, and I'm glad the stock market is up so the dems will STFU. And so far, very few civilians have died due to our massive bombing, which is good, cuz most anti-war protestors seemed to think that's the reason we shouldn't go to war. They seem to forget that Saddam himself kills more of his own people than we would even if we were aiming for 'em. But anyway, it looks like this will be a short sweet to the point war, and Bushie can gloat he did what his daddy and Clinton shoulda done but didn't. And maybe he'll get re-elected too! His "approval" rating is up, and over 3/4 of Americans support the war now hehee. (Since we're kickin' ass no doubt.) Sorry for the overly long update, I am done now.
