Sunday, January 26, 2003 Today I am feeling: peaceful
Books I am reading: The Subtle Knife Philip Pullman Voyages Through the Universe Fraknoi/Morrison/Wolff Games I am SimCity 4 Finally, a practical use for geometry. Actually, geometry is the only kind of math I like cuz I can use it to draw pictures and stuff. But crop circles are a cool way to utilize geometry. I dunno where they come from or who makes 'em, but it doesn't matter to me, they're nifty all the same, and in a way I think it's kinda more impressive if humans make 'em than if aliens do. And don't ya think if aliens were gonna communicate they'd choose another more impressive way? I mean, aliens are kinda like God. If I was God I wouldn't whisper sweet nothings in the ears of elderly invalid men or put faces of my son on tortillas, nope, I'd do something really impressive like change the color of the sky and make it glow with giant letters proclaiming my existence. All this business about mysterious things existing but hiding their existence and requiring "faith" in them is stupid. If we send out space probes do we make it hard for alien lifeforms to know we're intelligent beings? Nope, we make it pretty obvious in several different ways and hope that the laws of physics apply everywhere across the universe and that lifeforms evolve senses the same as we have so they can hear or see the messages. Of course, maybe aliens think if they do crop circles, in a seemingly obvious place (our food supply) we'll notice them. But then wouldn't they do stuff to other things too? I dunno, it's all pretty interesting but I'm not convinced of the existence of aliens on our planet anymore than I'm convinced of the existence of a scorekeeping God who requires "admission" to his "club" (religion) before he'll let you attend his party (heaven). I do think it's possible somewhere in this universe there might be lifeforms though, although I dunno if they're "intelligent", but if ya consider the enormity of stuff out there, the chances are pretty good there are. If ya take every possible outcome of every possibility in terms of environmental conditions and evolution, sooner or later something interesting is gonna happen somewhere. The odds of it happening are pretty astronomical (pun intended) but the odds against it happening are greater. But how often does it happen? That's the interesting question.
