Today I am feeling: glad for MLKjr

Books I am reading:
Sacred Contracts Caroline Myss
Voyages Through the Universe Fraknoi/Morrison/Wolff

Games I am playing:
SimCity 4

It's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day today and since government offices close for every possible holiday, I didn't have to go to school so I took my cat to the vet. What a wonderful way to celebrate MLK jr's contributions to humanity. Uhm ... yeah. Anyway, I think MLK jr was a cool dude, well I guess so, seeing as I never met him or heard him speak live because he was murdered when I was a very small child. But from what I know he was cool. Unfortunately, a lot of people use this day to further their agendas and keep racism entrenched in this country by reminding people that MLKjr was a black civil rights activist/humanitarian/whatever rather than a civil rights activist/humanitarian/whatever, which kinda defies the whole point of what he was trying to teach, doesn't it? He was human dammit, and being human means not being defined by your skin color. As long as we categorize or discriminate (both for and against) people because of race, racism will thrive in this country. Oh, and calling race "ethnicity" doesn't solve the problem, either, and although ethnicity usually engenders not only ancestry (and thereby skin color) but also culture, that doesn't make it ok. I think we should be more open to sharing our cultural roots with our children and our community, but keep the race part out of it. And get rid of those little boxes on forms that ask what you are. Years ago those boxes used to say "race" and there was usually an "other" box and I'd check that and put "human" in it, but now they've usually replaced the word "race" with "ethnicity" or "ethnic origin" which, quite frankly, is none of their business. So I usually leave it blank now, which kinda sucks, cuz when I could fill in "human" it could at least get people to maybe think a little, now it just looks like I'm too lazy to fill it in. Maybe I should put something like "Universarian" or something.

Anyway, enough ranting on that issue. I took my kitty to the vet again today for her 3rd and final set of kitten boosters. She got three shots today, owie, and she got a thermometer shoved up her butt. Fun! But she doesn't have to get any more shots for a year, but she does still need to be spayed, which, if all goes as planned, I will do in mid-February cuz I have yet another holiday then so I can be home with my baby after her surgery. Wow, that sounds pathetic doesn't it? Hehee. I've had cats spayed before and it's usually no big deal but this cat is so hyper she might pop her sutures or something by jumping around and stuff, she loves to race around and jump and attack stuff. She'll go nuts if she can't do that, maybe I'll have to sedate her. Anyway, my kitten now weighs 4 pounds, 3 oz, which means she's gained almost another pound in the last month, that's a pound a month so far. Poor kitty is skinny too, she eats like a pig but she runs around so much she burns most of it off. But she's a lean, mean attack-cat machine. <veg>
