Monday, June 24, 2002 What happens when someone steals your eyeball? Ok, let me explain. I am working on a report for my speech class on identity theft and while doing research, I ran across stuff on biometrics and how it'll be the Next Big Thing in privacy protection and all that. Yeah. Whatever. Anyway, the argument the pro-biometrics people give is that it's safer since if someone steals your credit card, for instance, they can't use it unless their eyeball matches the retinal scan the bank has on file for your card. This sounds all fine and dandy. But there's a catch. As things are now, if someone steals your credit card, you generally report it to the credit card issuing company and they cancel the card and issue you a new one. But what happens when a thief steals your credit card when it's attached to a biometric marker? Does the bank just issue a new card and link it to your eyeball? What if someone steals your eyeball? Then what do you do? Do you go to the bank, one-eyed, and try to explain that they need to link up your remaining eyeball with your credit card data? And how do you prove it's really your card? And how do you keep the bank employees from laughing?
